I'm going to be honest with you.
A year ago, if you'd told me I'd be building a Valais Blacknose sheep farm in Connecticut, I would have laughed. I'm a marketer. A business owner. A mom of four. My world was clients, strategy sessions, and figuring out how to grow businesses - not livestock, pasture management, and learning the difference between hay and silage.
But here we are.
My husband Ayrton and I have always been drawn to the idea of a farm. Not a massive commercial operation, but something manageable. Something that connected us to the land and gave our kids a different kind of childhood than suburban sprawl offers.
We started researching different livestock options. Goats (too destructive). Alpacas (intriguing but not quite right). Standard sheep breeds (practical but not exciting).
And then I saw a photo of a Valais Blacknose sheep. You know the moment. That black face. The spiral horns. The woolly teddy bear look that doesn't seem real. I sent it to Ayrton with "Are these real? Can we get them?" That question sent us down a rabbit hole of research, and what we found was... exciting!
Valais Blacknose sheep are incredible. Hardy, friendly, useful, beautiful. Everything we wanted in a farm animal. The breeders who'd worked hard to establish this breed in North America deserved respect - importing sheep, navigating quarantine, building breeding programs from scratch. That's real work. But we also kept thinking: these sheep are too good to stay in such a small circle. They're perfect for hobby farms and small farms. For families. For people who want livestock that's manageable and rewarding without needing decades of experience or unlimited resources. So we made a decision: we'd build a breeding program for that purpose!
Wool & Wonder Farm exists to make Valais Blacknose sheep accessible to hobby farmers. Not by cutting corners or compromising on quality. But by being transparent, educational, and focused on supporting new owners rather than gatekeeping.
We're breeding for:
Quality: Registered Valais Blacknose with documented genetics and correct breed characteristics
Temperament: Exceptionally friendly, calm sheep that are a joy to own
Health: Sound animals with good structure and hardy constitutions
Accessibility: We want people to succeed with these sheep, not struggle
We're building our foundation flock carefully. Selecting for the traits that matter - not just appearance, but temperament, health, and overall quality. Our first lambs will be available spring 2027.
We're located in Guilford, Connecticut - and honestly, the climate here is ideal for Valais Blacknose. Cold winters? They thrive in it. Four distinct seasons? They handle the variability beautifully. The Northeast has everything these Swiss Alpine sheep need to be healthy and happy. We're also excited to be part of strengthening the Northeast Valais Blacknose community. More breeders in this region means better support for everyone, easier access to quality breeding stock, and a stronger network. Our 15-acre property gives us room to raise sheep thoughtfully, manage pastures well, and build the infrastructure these animals deserve.
We're not "sheep people" trying to do marketing. We're marketers building a sheep farm. That might sound backward, but it's actually our strength. We understand how intimidating it is to enter a niche community as an outsider. We want to make it as accessible as possible for anyone who wants to own Valais sheep!
We're documenting our journey. Sharing what we're learning. Building resources that didn't exist when we started. And when we have lambs available, we'll support our buyers the way we wish we'd been supported.
This is a family operation.
Ayrton and I are doing this together, with "help" from our four kids who are learning that farms involve actual work (sorry, kids). We're blending this farm dream with our existing businesses, our chaotic family life, and the reality that we're figuring this out as we go.
We're not pretending to be experts. We're learning from people who've been doing this for years. We're making mistakes and adjusting. We're committed to doing this well, even when it's harder than we expected.
Wool & Wonder Farm is more than just our breeding program. We built valaisblacknosesheep.com as a comprehensive resource for anyone interested in the breed - whether they're buying from us or not. That site has become the go-to educational resource for people researching Valais Blacknose sheep. We plan to maintain a vetted breeder directory connecting people with quality farms across the country.
We answer questions, share resources, and help people succeed with this breed - even if they never buy a sheep from us.
Because honestly? These sheep are too good to stay in such a small circle. The more people who can responsibly raise them, the better.
Have questions? Contact us - we're happy to help whether you're buying from us or just learning about the breed. Welcome. We're glad you're here.
